The West Australian akui silap siar artikel anak PM

The West Australian akui silap siar artikel anak PM

KUALA LUMPUR 4 Nov.

Aussie newspaper admits it was wrong

Australian newspaper clarifies PM’s daughter not in PerthKUCHING: Perth newspaper The West Australian has published a clarification admitting it wrongly reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s daughter had gone on a shopping spree during the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) there.
On Monday, The West Australian had claimed that Najib’s daughter spent A$60,000 (RM180,000) in high-end department store David Jones.

The paper printed a retraction in its Letters page on Thursday under the heading ‘Corrections and Clarifications’ that: “The West Australian acknowledges that this was not the case and that Najib’s daughter was not in Perth at the time.”

A Portable Document Format (PDF) copy of the page was emailed to The Borneo Post by The West Australian business journalist Neale Prior. This was in reply to an email from The Borneo Post seeking a clarification on the report.
The West Australian also said its policy is “to correct significant errors as quickly as possible”.

Readers are directed to contact the readers’ editor by mail at The Readers’ Editor, The West Australian, 50 Hasler Road, Osborne Park WA 6017, or sending a fax to +61-8-94823177, or emailing reader@wanews.com.au.

Complainants are requested to include the headline, page number and date of publication of the report in their correspondence, as well as telephone number.
On Wednesday, Najib tweeted a denial over the news report that his wife and daughter had shopped excessively during his Perth visit to attend CHOGM.

The Prime Minister, who is in Mecca to perform the haj, had replied to a question in a tweet on Wednesday saying, “Don’t believe and spread lies. My daughter was not even in Australia and my wife did not buy any jewellery.”

The Malaysian Consul-general in Perth Hamidah Ashari had written to The West Australian’s editor on Tuesday, saying her office was appalled upon reading the article ‘Delegates go shopping, sightseeing’ published in the Oct 31 issue.
She said Najib’s daughter was not part of the Prime Minister’s delegation attending CHOGM, nor was she in Perth at that time.

The false report had been circulating online, particularly on opposition sites.
